tl;dr

Coming from the outsorsed web development world, we've been involved in a shameful number of projects, both small and large. Upon our clients' requests, we've been "getting our hands dirty" with setting up all the trendy analytics and data tools out there: GTM, Google Analytics, Mixpanel, Heap analytics, Hotjar, Segment, Lytics, and the list goes on...

And guess what - almost always these were overkills.

Hours of development time were wasted on building 15 graphs or other data representations, 14 of which no one ever looks at. Pre-revenue product? 1-10 team size product? You simply don’t need any of these tools.

Let’s be realistic here — when does the point come when a SaaS or a simple static website needs an enterprise-oriented solution maintained by a data engineer?

And if you are small and just want to be able to quickly check the most important metrics, which tool should you choose?

It's unbearably sad that only a tiny percentage of website owners know that something other than Google Analytics exists.

It's time to be mindful and integrate analytics that you'll actually use and enjoy doing so.

Current analytics market

If you've been following the market for some time, you probably know that there are plenty of analytics and data platforms out there already, both simple and feature-packed.

Believe it or not, when talking about simple analytics, nothing seemed like a good fit for us. Let's take a look at some of these tools.

Plausible, Fathom, Umami, and similar services are beyond awesome and they do provide great dashboards for static websites, blogs, or e-commerce shops.

But what they don’t cover is that SaaS part - user profiles and journeys, an overview of how your authorized visitors interact with your product. There's no basic in-app product analytics.

Also their UX and feel just don't hit our mark.

PostHog? It’s great, but we can't help feeling overcrowded once inside.

Google Analytics, Mixpanel, Hotjar, Heap… Bloated, unnecessary for beginners.

Analytics is an extension of your product. It is something you check many times a day when you care for your business.

Dashboard with unique visits, page views, your marketing channels performance, funnels, alerts, user profiles and journeys. Clean and served within seconds, letting you start working with the data immediately.

And that’s it. Your 20 to 80. We strongly believe it’s more than enough for someone just starting and up until a decent traction.

If you've ever used analytics called Splitbee (acquired by Vercel) and you loved it, you'll know what we're talking about.

We’ll say it without shame - Seline analytics is hugely inspired by Splitbee. And by many other tools that are rising up to find a niche among enterprise machines. Independent, transparent, down-to-earth, and creative.
